Caring For My Candle

What are some tips and tricks to maximize the full potential of my candle?

  • We suggest storing the candle between 65-75 degrees for optimal performance as soy wax has a melting point of 113-119 degrees.
  • The first time you burn the candle, let it burn for 3-4 hours as you will want a complete wax melt on the top.
  • A successive number of short burns may create a tunneling effect, not allowing the candle to create a wide burn pool. If this does happen, burn for at least 2 hours.
  • If the candle starts to pool to one side more than the other it may be the result of draft, uneven surface or a leaning wick. Remedy this by adjusting the wick to the correct position, rotating the candle, and/or moving it to a different location so it is out of the draft.
  • If the wick starts to smoke, it is most likely due to insufficient trimming. The wicks may give a small degree of smoke when just lit but once they attain ample heating, they will burn without smoke.
  • Keep candle free of any foreign materials including matches and wick trimmings.
  • Always burn candles within sight and always keep out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Do not burn the candle all the way to the bottom of the vessel as it burn the surface of where the candle is placed (we suggest leaving at least a ¼”).
  • Trim wick before each use as this will maximize the performance of the candle.
    • Wooden wicks can be trimmed using wooden wick shears, large nail clippers or diagonal cutting pliers. Wooden wicks should be trimmed to 1/8” above the wax after each use.
    • Hemp wicks can be cut with scissors and should be trimmed to 1/4” above the wax after each use.
  • Wooden wicks
    • Wooden wicks are not recommended for outdoor use.
    • They take a little longer to light than the hemp wick.
  • Additional Notes
    • Wet Spots - Some candles may develop some separation between the wax and the side of the vessel. Shrinkage and air bubbles occur due to some areas of the wax cooling faster than others. Due to this, part of the wax pulls away from the glass while the remainder adheres to the sides of the container, giving it a particular look. Luckily, it does not affect the way your candle performs.
    • Jagged Top - Soy wax dries in a much rougher way than the other waxes so you may notice this occasionally. Again it is just an aesthetic of soy wax and does not impact the performance of the candle.
    • Frosting - As your candle dries you may notice there is a crystallization to the wax. This is another property of using soy wax and does not impact the performance of the candle. In actuality, it is a sign of purity that in fact the wax is 100% soy.
    • Yellowing - All of our candles are made using natural products and contain no ultraviolet stabilizers. In bright sunlight or under florescent lights, candles can turn yellow or have the natural color of the wax fade. This does not change the scent or degrade the candle in any way.
